VAU's fame stretches back more than 200 years, to a time when Jewish socialite and activist Rahel Varnhagen invited the intellectual elite to join her for conversation and debate in this locale on Jägerstraße on the Gendarmenmarkt.

Today's capital city offers more than enough to talk about, allowing this tradition to continue on the same spot. Restaurant general manager Petra Kleeberg stands behind this kind of hospitality, for "eating with friends as if in the comfort of a friend's home."

The uniformly high standards in place since the day it opened its doors reflects on the work of Head Chef Kolja Kleeberg, whose efforts, together with those of his team, were awarded with a Michelin star after only a year had passed since opening the restaurant's doors (see also other awards).
Fresh, seasonal products – where possible from the Berlin area – and a consistent pursuit of the philosophy of his gastronomical mentor Josef Viehhauser, who called for no more than three products on any given plate, are the keys to the kitchen's success.

VAU restaurant is a grand accomplishment by master architect Meinhard von Gerkan (known for Berlin's Lehrter Bahnhof), with interior decoration by Peter Schmidt (featured at BOSS, Davidoff), with artwork by the multi-prize winning Cologne artist Oliver Jordan. Through the connection between glass and steel, shale and pearwood, Venetian 'stucco lustro' plaster walls and Thonet cantilever chairs, VAU is one of the most modern restaurants in Berlin.
